Young Filmmakers Program:
Every year, QWFF provides Filmmaker Mentors to PS 69Q to immerse a lucky 5th grade class in a film production experience that takes them from pitch to production. Students rotate through production roles and it is the goal of the program to make sure that every student is able to fully participate in the collaborative nature of filmmaking.
The theme is always My Character and the students create essays that recount an experience that revealed an unknown strength. As the 5th graders set their sights on transitioning into middle school, this project encourages them to explore their own character while providing them with the opportunity to contribute to something bigger than themselves: a finished short film.
Our 2019 Filmmaker Mentors are Don Cato, Patti Lowenhaupt, Natasha Rowley, Jill Salvino and Shareef Snuggs and they are assisted by LaGuardia Community College interns Vincent Liu and Bhagyashree Som. We don't do this alone and are so appreciative of the schools Principal Martha Vazquez, Assistant Principal Ms. Voula Lekas-Wells and the dream teaching staff at PS 69 who work so hard to make sure the students take advantage of this opportunity. Our supreme gratitude belongs to Ms. Debbie Cregan, the school's Arts Coordinator and Liaison who makes it all possible.
The films will be featured at our popular Kids Corner screening at the Museum of the Moving Image on March 22, 2019 which, with your help, will be free to all participating students and their families.
When you help fund this program, you are empowering young people to imagine, create and realize IDEAS and in essence you are supporting everyone's future.
