Oleg Timofeyev: The 7-string Guitar & The GULAG
A guitarist with an international reputation, a scholar, and a documentary film director, Oleg Timofeyev (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleg_Timofeyev) is mostly regarded as a pioneer in the revival of Russias forgotten treasure, the Russian seven-string guitar. Below you can read two recent articles about his commitment to this monumental undertaking:

His December 2018 concerts in Boston and New York will consist of two parts.
In the first half, Timofeyev will play the earliest works for the Russian 7-string guitar, showing how it developed from a cosmopolitan instrument, originally played by the Czech and Polish musicians, to something uniquely Russian.
After a short intermission, he will continue with the works of Matvei Stepanovich Pavlov (stage name Azancheev) who was a MoscowConservatory-trained cellist, symphony conductor, and composer, as well as a self-taught guitarist. Pavlov-Azancheev spent the years 19451955 in a labor camp. During this decade, guitar and guitar playing were particularly important in his life. He sent a number of his scores out of his labor camp, some just neatly copied, others newly composed. Timofeyev will present some of his best compositions, and will also read fragments from Azancheevs letters sent to the free world from the GULAG.
