Forward Motion, produced by Karen Peterson and Dancers, is one of the first festivals and conferences anywhere in the world showcasing groundbreaking physically integrated dance companies and choreography. This contemporary dance form inclusive of those with and without disabilities, on stage, and in the audience challenges artistic and societal perceptions of what defines physical beauty and beautiful movement. Forward Motion will take place from September 26-29, 2018, and feature some of the best dance companies of any kind, in performance, in discussion and holding workshops.
7:00pm Moving In: Intersecting Disability, Sexuality, Race, Religion, Ethnicity & Gender Today, there are many social issues being raised around inclusion and equity such as ones led by the movements #MeToo and Black Lives Matters. Disability rights are not as widely discussed and often intersectional identities are excluded from these other movements. The conversation moderated by Nadege Green (journalist/ WLRN) places disability and ableism on the table as relevant and explores some lesser known movements and campaigns such as Disable the Label, #DisabilityTooWhite and The Future is Accessible. Panelists include James Bowen (AXIS Dance Company) Joel Brown (Candoco Dance Company), JanpiStar AKA Jean P Crespo Rodriguez (AXIS Dance Company), Annie Segarra (artist, activist, YouTuber), and Pioneer Winter (choreographer/dancer).
