Flory Jagoda, the "Keeper of the Flame" of Sephardic music, was born into the Sephardic community of Sarajevo, Bosnia. Flory escaped the destruction of Sarajevo's Jewish community, eventually arriving in the United States after World War II.
Susan Gaeta, former apprentice to Flory, has become a master and is apprenticing singer and songwriter Gina Sobel. Susan and Gina will share Flory's songs, heartfelt ballads, and memories of Flory's Bosnian Jewish community, as well as present their own twists reflective of a similar spirit.
Susan Gaeta has studied and toured with legendary, Flory Jagoda as well as her own band, Trio Sefardi. She is a master artist through the Master Apprentice program of Virginia Humanities. Gina Sobel is a singer/composer and an accomplished flute, saxophone, and guitar player. She is a Strathmore Artist in Residence.
This evening is presented in partnership with HIAS and a portion of the proceeds will benefit their mission. HIAS works around the world to protect refugees who have been forced to flee their homelands because of who they are, including ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities. For more than 130 years, guided by Jewish values, HIAS has been helping refugees rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.
