Spring into Summer
As Spring gives way to Summer, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. The produce is fresh and local, the sun is warm, and the breeze is cool. It's the perfect time to head up to the roof of Brooklyn Grange's Navy Yard location and dine amongst the rows of arugula while raising funds for City Growers, the 501c3 non-profit organization educating kids on farms, in classrooms, and in school gardens around the city about environmental literacy!

We're teaming up with Chef Winston Chiu and the amazing team at BonBite Events to create an evening to remember. The good people at Happy Valley, the whole animal meat company bringing sustainably, ethically raised beef and lamb to the City's best restaurants, are setting aside some prime cuts just for us. And of course we won't leave our vegetarian friends hanging: City Growers students have sown seed for fragrant basil, crisp radishes, and flavorful salad greens, among other crops, so that our guests can enjoy the bounty of Spring's end, and Summer's beginning. Finally, we'll round the night out with a whimsical and delicious dessert from Chef Rose McAdoo of Whisk Me Away Cakes!

The Spring into Summer dinner will mark the end of City Growers' spring campaign, which aims to raise funds to send 15 children from low income families to summer camp, free of charge. Help kids around the city spring into Summer with your ticket purchase!

Dinner will be preceded by a cocktail hour sponsored by the artisans at Brooklyn Gin, and paired with beer from Blue Point Brewing, dry cider from Austin Eastcider, and fresh, spring wines.

ABOUT CITY GROWERS
City Growers is a small, grassroots organization. The vast majority of our budget goes directly to educating kids who would otherwise be unable to afford traditional after school or summer camp programs, or whose schools don't have budget for basic tools, let alone field trips. We believe that equitable education is the first step to real change, and that kids in low-income schools and neighborhoods should have as much access to nature-based learning as those from higher income areas. Urban farming can reveal the inexorable connection between human health and environmental health. We believe that we need more urban more farms, and more urban youth learning and growing on them. We work incredibly hard to make our programs free and accessible for low income families and Title 1 (high poverty) schools, and we are proud that of the 40k+ kids we've worked with, 71% are from low income families in NYC. This fundraiser will directly support scholarships and underwrite programs, ensuring that ALL kids in New York City can get their hands in the soil.

ABOUT HAPPY VALLEY
Happy Valley Meat Company exists to make better lives for the people and animals that feed us. To do this, Happy Valley works with responsibly-operated small family farms, buying pasture-raised whole animals and breaking them into cuts, allowing convenient responsible sourcing for chefs. They create better markets for farmers, bolstering the economy of traditional agricultural communities.Contrary to commodity farming, their partner farmers set the price they need to make a living before they sell. In this way, the farmer is ensured a more stable income, avoiding the big packers who only tell them how much their time and energy is worth after the animal is sold.

ABOUT WHISK ME AWAY CAKES
Whisk Me Away Cakes is an original blend of pastry art, activism, and storytelling. After living and sharing meals with disenfranchised populations around the globe, founder Rose McAdoo uses cake to create delicious art that influences public understanding. Her desserts tell stories centered around immigration reform, sustainable farming practices, and environmental protection. While farming at Brooklyn Grange in 2015, she candied rainbow chard stems, an experiment which expanded into a vegetable-focused dessert partnership for our Butcher Paper Dinner series and many other specialty farm events. www.WhiskMeAwayCakes.com
