Aquatic Plants of Western Pennsylvania

Description: This workshop will focus on the identification of submerged aquatic vascular plants, and selected emergent plant species associated with lacustrine environments (i.e. plants that grow under water or are rooted under shallow water at the edges of lakes). Emphasis will be placed on problematic groups such as Potamogeton (pondweeds) and Myriophyllum (water-milfoils). Live material and herbarium specimens will be provided for examination and identification. Participants are encouraged to bring specimens they have had difficulty identifying.

No prior knowledge of aquatic plant species will be assumed, but some experience with plant identification will be helpful. Magnification is a must for identifying aquatic plants; please bring along a magnifier of at least 10× (we will have a few extras). Please bring whatever manuals you use, or anticipate using, to identify aquatic plants. Recommended manuals for aquatic plants in northwestern Pennsylvania include Field Manual of Michigan Flora, by E.G. Voss and A.A. Reznicek, 2012, The University of Michigan Press (about $25); and Aquatic Plants of Pennsylvania: A Complete Reference Guide, 2011, University of Pennsylvania Press (about $60).
