Renaissance Holiday Concert with Tina Chancey and Brian Kay
Bring in the holidays with hauntingly beautiful music spanning centuries and continents in the lovely candlit atmosphere of the St Peters Lutheran Church.  Tina Chancey (longtime director) of HESPERUS joins with Brian Kay from DIVISIO, a Baltimore-based group mixing Early music and Early magic designed to drive the cold winter away.
DIVISIOs musical influences cut a broad swath  from Spain, Italy, Greece, to Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Northern Africa. Grounded in these living traditions, Divisio sends roots into cultures long gone and wide branches into cultures still in development, believing that world music has more elements in common than it has differences, and when fused together these differences dissolve, exposing the true humanity of music  its power to make you want to dance or cry, to question or believe.
What better partner for HESPERUS, dedicated to making connections between the rich musical past and curious 21st century audiences through its collaboration with world music, film and theater? Together the three musicians play more than a dozen early and traditional instruments from oud to viol and kamenj to tar, in a program that will energize and delight you.
The duo are multi-instrumentalists: between them, they have 56 strings, at least 6  drums, two unique voices.  Brian Kay can play many instruments, and transfix audiences with his emotional singing. The duo combines the lively, virtuosic playing of Tina Chancey on fiddle, viola da gamba and other renaissance bowed strings with the sensitive accompaniment of Brian on theorbo, renaissance guitar and cittern.
The concert is at 8:00pm, late enough to allow a family dinner, and takes place in the lovely candlelit atmosphere of the stone chapel of St. Peters Lutheran Church.

TINA CHANCEY plays viola da gamba and renaissance violin in this ensemble.  She is director of the early/traditional music group HESPERUS and their fiddle specialist, playing Irish and old time violin; kamenj, lyra, rebec and vièle; viola da gamba and pardessus de viole, all of which she plays indiscriminately on Sephardic music, early music, blues, and jazz standards.

Tina is also a member of Trio Sefardi, and the contradance band North-South Railroad, and a former member (for 25 years) of the Folger Consort and the rock band, Blackmore's Night. She also produces recordings for other artists, writes articles, and directs the Sound Catcher Workshop where she teaches playing by ear and improvisation. Her most recent solo recording is American Landscapes. She has received 2 WAMMIES for best Classical Instrumentalist and a Lifetime Acheivement Award in Education from Early Music America. She lives in Arlington, VA.

Brian Kay is a modern-day troubadour. As an acclaimed singer and multi-instrumentalist, Brian has performed throughout the United States and beyond. He is a songwriter and an arranger of ancient songs, he specializes in plucked instruments and percussion, and he is a poet and visual artist. During the 2014 season, Brian appeared in major US cities such as Boston, Cleveland, Houston, Tulsa, Washington DC, and New York.

Brian's concerts have been described as "Far-ranging", "Brilliant", and "Exciting" Cleveland Classical. His singing was praised "Emotional and Heart-felt" Boston Musical Intelligencer and "Sinister and tragic-the most affecting vocal performance" The Cleveland Plain Dealer. His lute and oud playing have been called "Masterful" Nuvo and "Phenomenal" Early Music America. He is the only two time winner of The LSA national lute competition and the 2013 recipient of Peabody Conservatory's "Excellence in Early Music Award."

The concert will be held in St Peters Lutheran Church, on the corner of King and High Streets in Shepherdstown, WV on Saturday, December 23 at 8:00 PM.  Advance tickets will be $20 adults, $18 seniors, $15 members and $10 students; and $22 adults, $20 seniors, $18 members and $10 students at the door.  Advance tickets will be available online from Brown Paper Tickets.  For more information see the web page at http://smad.us or call Joanie Blanton at (304) 263-2531 or email at upperpotomac@gmail.com for more details.
