Kitsap County Conference for Human Rights
Kitsap County Conference for Human Rights takes place 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, December 15 at Olympic College in Bremerton. This year's theme is "Historical Perspectives and Moving Forward." The conference is organized by the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights and sponsors include Olympic College, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners and Sound Publishing.
This year's keynote speaker will be Clarence Moriwaki, president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community and founder and past president of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association. He will present "History, Honor, Healing and Hope: The timeless - and timely - story of the devastating impacts of fear, prejudice, intolerance and failure of political leadership during World War II, and the hopeful, healing power of redemption to let it not happen again."
The conference begins with a complimentary continental breakfast, followed by the keynote address, a panel discussion on "Personal Perspectives and the Path Forward,"
complimentary lunch, a spoken word performance and afternoon workshops.

- Sharing Stories and Increasing Community Capacity: Building Facilitation Skills" with Airen Lydick of Kitsap SURJ, Civil Survival, NAACP and Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center.
- Experiencing a Restorative Circle" with Robert Galbraith and Sue Miglino of the Dispute Resolution Center of Kitsap County.
- Human Trafficking, Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault - Violations of Human Rights" with Emma Catague, an advocate for victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking and Velma Veloria, local Filipino American who works with labor unions.
- Reconciliation: An Approach to Teaching About Race, Ethnicity, Ex Identity and other Controversial Topics: with Karen Vargas, co-director of the Living Arts & Cultural Heritage Center and founding member of the Multicultural Advisory Council of the Bainbridge Island School District, and Karen Polinsky, writer and former teacher.
- Is Washington State Violating Human Rights When it Comes to Equity in Education" with Sharonne Navas. co-founder and executive director of the Equity in Education Coalition
- Quilts and Human Rights - Historically and Today" with Marcie Mathis, avid quilter and longtime human rights advocate.
- Archaic Voting Systems Cripple Democracy - The Case for Election Reform" with Data Logan, scientist, engineer and founding member of FairVoteWA, working to improve voting systems.
