Where Domestic Violence and Fair Housing Intersect - Understand Your Rights - CANCELED

On November 8th the Jefferson Center TAP, the City of Roanoke Fair Housing Board, the Virginia Fair Housing Office along with _____________ are sponsoring seminar to enlighten us on what happens when Domestic Violence and Fair Housing Laws intersect.  

There will be Speakers from the following organizations will provide information sessions:
     * Various domestic violence organizations,
     * Virginia Fair Housing Office,
     * Virginia's Attorney General's Office,
     * State & local Legal Aid Offices, and
     * Virginia Poverty Law Center  

Come out and learn your rights!
The following statistics were pulled from the Homeless and Domestic Violence website and supports the need for such event:

1 - 16% of homeless persons are victims of domestic violence.

2 - Approximately 50% of all women who are homeless report that
    domestic violence was the immediate cause of their
    homelessness.

3 - Domestic violence creates vulnerability to homelessness for
     women and children with limited economic resources. Among
     mothers with children experiencing homelessness, more than
     80% had previously experienced domestic violence.

4 - 84% of homeless women have experienced severe physical or
     sexual abuse at some point in their lives.

5 -  63% of homeless women have been victims of intimate partner
     violence as adults.

6 - 33% of homeless women have been victims of severe assault by
    their current or most recent intimate partner.

7 -  By age 12, 83% of homeless children have been exposed to at
     least one serious violent event and nearly 25% have witnessed
     acts of violence within their families.

8 - Mothers experiencing homelessness have three times the rate of
     post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (36%) and twice the
     rate of drug and alcohol dependence (41%).

9 - About 50% of mothers experienced a major depressive episode
     since becoming homeless. They have ulcers at four times the
     rate of other women.
