Tonight, as spring returns to the north, we offer the world-healing music of two outstanding singer-songwriters.
Upon his return from a 1997 trek through war-ruined Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canadian singer-songwriter Jon Brooks quit music claiming, "I'm at least a 1000 books and emotions shy of earning the right to stand behind a microphone." Eight years later at the suggestion of one of his Canadian literary heroes, Austin Clarke Jon wiped the dust off his Taylor Jumbo 615. His mandate is unequivocal: "I'm not interested in 'happy songs' I've chosen to write healing songs and, for that reason, I'm obliged to reveal a wound or two now and then. I'm even less interested in writing unhappy songs: I want to write hopeful songs."
Colleen Kattau first appeared on our stage in 2012 with Holly Near. Tonight the Central New York activist songwriter returns with her playful, poignant, do-right songs. She sings in English and Spanish on topical themes connected with peace, social change, and human rights in a voice that has been compared to Natalie Merchant & Shawn Colvin. Pete Seeger said of Colleen, "Joe Hill would be proud. A great singer and organizer at the same time."
