Emerging Artists returns with their one-of-a-kind festival. Visit the theater any evening during this three-week event, and you'll find yourself transported in a number of surprising ways: by a single performer embodying a whole host of characters; by a more experimental theater piece "done differently" that challenges and delights; by a cozy two-person show exploring relationships; or perhaps by a bouncy new musical that will have you humming. Emerging Artists has always been about new works, new talents, new voices. That's never been more evident than now.

Working for the Mouse as a Mermaid Princess, a young woman experiences a complex initiation into matters Mermaid. Musical, frustrating, blessed, political, watery, wonderful and weird, our Mermaid princess-for-hire has a few things to say and sing about it from a uniquely underwater perspective. An NC-17 commentary and collage on coming of age wearing a sequined fin.

"MOLLIE AND HARRY"

Choices made out of fear can haunt a lifetime. "Mollie and Harry" explores love lost and those last moments of a human lifespan as the embers of awareness slowly fade out.

Inspired by comedy teams such as Lucy and Desi, and George Burns and Gracie Allen, this is an old-school vaudeville comedy act with modern humor. Includes a tango, the classic song "On the Street Where She Lives," a yoga class, and a possible surprise. Expect much heart and a lot of laughs.

Ron, a former trapeze artist, and Dana, a recent widow, try out the tightrope of connecting on a first date that seems to include more than just themselves. This piece is an excerpt from "Damn Everything But the Circus," a triptych of love under the big top.

A music and movement piece depicting the journey of one person as they strive for understanding and acceptance of a loved one with medium to severe autism. Incorporating Tribal Filipino and National Japanese Traditional Music, martial arts movements and dance, this piece will surely touch the hearts and souls of those who can relate, and bring understanding to those who are not aware.

"THE RITUAL"

"The Ritual" started as a way to keep our friendship together. A way for us to stay connected, laugh about the absurdity of language, consider our careers, and discuss the performative (whatever that means). Finding meaning and mysticism over coffee and eggs, these are excerpts from our conversations over one 6-month period.

Kate and Devin share an intense affection for one another even after eight years of separation. Set in Devin's bedroom, "Dumped" is a sexy play about broken lovers who won't let each other go.

"THROUGH THE GLADE"

A small community theatre group in the South tries to avoid bankruptcy by writing their own version of "Into the Woods," using under-appreciated storybook characters and music from the public domain. Somewhat satirical, occasionally absurd, and always hilarious, "Through the Glade" is a semi-autobiographical mockery of every low-budget theatre experience you wish you'd never had.

Chopping and cutting through time and space, "Virus Attacks Heart" is a story about sex between strangers that becomes a story about love between lovers. When it ultimately falls apart in ways neither one of them see coming, this one moment lived to its fullest may be just enough to sustain them.

"HAPPY ANNIVERSARY"

Sam and Tim have broken up, and this painful realization has made both of them bitter. Tim dismisses Sam's plea to keep an anniversary gift, and the two have a final stand-off where they acknowledge that their failure to communicate what they wanted from each other has led to resentment, creating a distance they didn't know how to breach.

A short one-woman piece that started out as a bit of slam poetry, sat on a shelf for a long time, was taken out every once in awhile, reworked, and now for the first time is explored on stage. A dark fairy tale about the creation of the concept of religion and the harsh truths that result from defining the world around us.
