YOU GAVE ME A SONG offers an intimate portrait of old-time music pioneer Alice Gerrard and her remarkable, unpredictable journey creating and preserving traditional music. Gerrard will be with us to introduce the project and talk with the audience after the screening.

An important figure in American folk music, Alice Gerrard is a singer, instrumentalist, author, and educator who helped revive interest in old-time music through her collaborations with Hazel Dickens, as well as celebrating the importance of women in folk and bluegrass music. An excellent singer with a particular skill for harmonies, Gerrard's strong, plaintive vocal style was a link to folk music's past while also displaying a fresh, contemporary energy.

The film follows eighty-four year old Gerrard over several years, weaving together verité footage of living room rehearsals, recording sessions, songwriting, archival work, and performances with photos, rare field recordings, and animation. Much of the film is told in Alice's voice and via interviews with musical collaborators and family members who share the story of Alice and others chasing that high lonesome sound.

Gerrard and her band, The Piedmont Melody Makers, will be performing at the GottaGetGon Folk Festival at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds on Memorial Day Weekend.
