Napoleon III, Emperor of the French (1852-1870), sent a French expeditionary force to Mexico in 1862.  For the next five years, French military forces would operate in Mexico.  France temporarily set up Maximilian of Hapsburg, an Austrian prince, as Emperor of Mexico.  However, France was eventually compelled to withdraw its forces in 1867.  These events represent a turning point in Mexican and North American history.  In fact, Mexico's "Cinco de Mayo" celebrations have their origin in a battle involving French forces in 1862.

Michael Huenefeld will attempt to answer some key questions. What impact did France's intervention have on Mexican society? Why did France intervene in Mexico ?
