10 AM - BOB ALTSCHULER - Building a Bluegrass Banjo Break - Bob will guide you through an overview of break anatomy. We'll play hands-on examples of the parts and learn to choose and arrange them into a coherent solo, both on the fly and at home. You'll receive detailed handouts with lead-ins, fill in licks, rolls and licks for chords, and endings. And, we'll choose the parts to arrange and play one song in class as a hands-on exercise in how to create a break.

11:30 AM - DAVE KIPHUTH - Earl-tone and the Theory of Up the Neck Bluegrass Breaks - We'll do a short but intense how-to examination of Scruggs' incredible tone and move quickly to the theory of upper neck breaks using the Golden Ladder of chord patterns and the "cage method" for determining melody up there. This is a hands-on class, so bring your banjo!

1:30 PM - MARTIN GROSSWENDT - Dock Boggs Banjo - Moran Lee Dock Boggs was a powerful finger-style banjo player and singer from Norton, Virginia.  He recorded in the late 1920s; several of his songs from this period were included on Harry Smiths seminal Anthology of American Folk Music.  He recorded again extensively in the early 1960s after Mike Seeger sought him out and introduced him to the musicians and audiences of the folk revival. In this class well look at the consistent, well-thought-out picking style Dock used.  Bring a five-string banjo and a recording device.

3 PM - AUBREY ATWATER - The Songs and Banjo Styles of Lily May Ledford - Pioneer clawhammer banjo player, radio star, and leader of the first all-female string band, The Coon Creek Girls, Lily May Ledford had a fascinating life story and career. In 1992, Aubrey traveled to eastern Kentucky and befriended Lily May's granddaughter, Cari Norris, who taught Aubrey repertoire and technique from Lily May's legacy over many years. Join Aubrey in this workshop to discuss Lily May's life, variations of banjo technique, and learn a few of her traditional songs. (Advanced Beginner and up)
