Start Your Garden from Seed, Workshop with Nan Sterman, Feb 7, 2012
Seeds are magical little things, pieces of dried out "wood" that, when watered, suddenly come alive to make round purple eggplants, sweet red tomatoes, even savory basil.

Starting from seed allows gardeners to try varieties nurseries just don't sell.

This workshop focuses on seed starting basics.  We begin with how to read seed packages and which seeds to start in which seasons.

We talk about the best containers for starting seeds (we use the exclusive, reusable Rootrainer Growing System) and the best seed starting soils, too.

Then, we literally dig in and get planting.

We cover everything a hoping-for-green-thumb needs to raise a summer full of vegetables, fruits, and herbs, including seed starting secrets Nan's developed from years of starting her own garden from seed and testing seeds for Organic Gardening Magazine.

You'll end up with dirty fingernails, a smile on your face, and a big tray of  tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, pumpkins.  There may be some surprise seeds too!

If you've dreamed of starting seeds, or struggled with seeds in the past, this workshop is for you!

PLEASE NOTE: This small, hands-on workshop is limited to 15 people only.  Please reserve your spot before all the spaces fill.

F.A.Q.

Question : Is this your only seed-starting workshop this spring? Is there one in North County? I'll come to one for sure!
Réponse : There will be 7 seed starting workshops held across San Diego County in February and March. All are listed on Brown Paper Ticket (you can search for them by "Sterman"). There is a North County workshop in Encinitas, on March 17. Here's the URL for that workshop: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/221754 Hope to see you there!

Question : Do we need to bring pot(s)?
Réponse : Nan will supply the containers for starting tomatoes, eggplant, basil and all the smaller seeds. Please bring six or eight clean, washed 1 pt yogurt or cottage cheese containers or tomato/berry clamshells to use for staring large seeds like pumpking and sunflowers. Wash them in dishsoap then soak for about 20 min in a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water.
