Remembering Medicine Songs of Chief Seattle's Time with Johnny Moses
Remembering Medicine Songs of
Chief Seattle's Time with Johnny Moses is the closing program of the art gallery show "Duwamish Journey with Johnny Moses" which explores the traditional culture and spirituality of the Duwamish.  The gallery will be open from 11am to 7pm.

Johnny Moses, the noted native NW Storyteller, recently introduced 2 new CD's that preserve NW Salish Cultural for future generations. The CDs:  "Samish Songs of the San Juan Islands" and "Snohomish Songs of Puget Sound" were produced by Greg Fields, a professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  Johnny is a Tulalip Native American with a multi-tribal ancestry including  the Nuu-chah-nulth, Saanich, Snohomish, Duwamish, and Chehamus peoples. Moses and Fields have collaborated for a number of years on several projects concerning Pacific Northwest native culture and song, including a forthcoming book:  Sacred Breath: Culture and Medicine Teachings of the Pacific Northwest.  The two new CDs are part of a series recorded last year at Jack Straw Productions in Seattle, with a grant from the Jack Straw Foundation.

Speaking there in June 2011, Moses said:
"When I listen to the songs I have good feeling that the songs are going to be used in a good way, and most of all that the young people are going to be encouraged and know that they had a rich culture. We are losing so many of our young people, on our reservations and in cities. A lot of a young people that are leaving this world, dying too young and feeling that there is no hope.  And I really believe that the songs will help them The main reason I agreed to do this project is that I was thinking of the younger people, the next generation, something I could do to encourage our people today  I know my grandparents are happy.  Before they died I got to hear them tell me, 'We're so glad that you love the songs.  Keep on singing; don't give up.'"
