Fall Arts Trip to the Nasher Museum of Art & Sarah P. Duke Gardens

Join us for a guided tour of the NASHER MUSEUM OF ART AT DUKE UNIVERSITY, including their special exhibition "DISORDERLY CONDUCT: AMERICAN PAINTING AND SCULPTURE, 1960-1990," inspired by some of pluralistic approaches that characterized American painting and sculpture between 1960 and 1990. Drawn primarily from the Nashers collection and featuring several significant recent acquisitions, "Disorderly Conduct" includes works by Al Held, Philip Guston, Audrey Flack, Nancy Graves and David Salle, among others. Also on view during our visit will be the exhibitions "THE MEDICIS PAINTER: CARLO DOLCI AND 17TH-CENTURY FLORENCE" and "A PORTRAIT OF VENICE: JACOPO DE BARBARIS VIEW OF 1500."

Following our tour of the Nasher, we'll enjoy boxed lunches at the museum and free time before heading to the nearby Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

THE SARAH P. DUKE GARDENS have served the Duke and Durham communities for over 75 years. The idea of a public garden arose in the early 1930s, due to the vision of Dr. Frederic M. Hanes, a member of the original faculty of Duke Medical School. Dr. Hanes persuaded his friend Sarah P. Duke, widow of one of the university's founders, Benjamin N. Duke, to finance a garden bearing her name. However, by the time Sarah passed away in 1936, the gardens were in decline. Her daughter, Mary Duke Biddle, constructed a new garden, as memorial to her mother. Ellen Biddle Shipman (1869-1950), a pioneer in American landscape design, was selected to design the gardens which were dedicated in April 1939, and are considered her greatest work.

The Gardens feature five miles of allées, walks, and pathways throughout the gardens and four distinct areas: the original Terraces (known as the Historic Gardens); the H.L. Blomquist Garden of Native Plants (flora of the southeastern United States); the W.L. Culberson Asiatic Arboretum (plants of eastern Asia); and the Doris Duke Center Gardens.
