ABOUT THE FILMS:
Crooklyn (1994)
Starring: Alfre Woodard, Delroy Lindo + Zelda Harris
Plot: A semi-autobiographical film co-written and directed by Spike Lee. The film takes place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York during the summer of 1973. Its primary focus is a young girl, Troy, and her family. Throughout the film, Troy learns life lessons through her four rowdy brothers, her loving but strict mother, and her naive, struggling father.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 1 hr 55 min
Content Warning: mild obscenities; brief sexual language; mild drug use (sniffing glue); death of a family member

Do The Right Thing (1989):
Starring: dir. Spike Lee, Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Richard Edson, Giancarlo Esposito, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, Samuel L. Jackson + Rosie Perez.
Plot:  "The story takes place on the hottest day of the summer and revolves around Sal's Famous Pizzeria, the only white-owned business in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Rather than being a film about clear rights and wrongs, Do the Right Thing is instead a cultural melange that is cumulatively an intricately detailed portrait of an ethnically diverse contemporary urban American neighborhood."- Film Reference Forum http://www.filmreference.com/Films-De-Dr/Do-the-Right-Thing.html
MPAA Rating: R
Running Time: 2 hours
Content Warning: brief nudity, excessive profanity, racialized derogatory language

WHAT IS THE BOYCOTT THE OSCARS CINEMA PROJECT?
Our #BoycottTheOscars neighborhood cinema project is based in Lower North Philadelphia/Brewerytown, an epicenter of exponentially-advancing gentrification. We seek to bring together longstanding North Philadelphia residents and those newcomers moving in  as neighbors.

Our community film screenings will take place at various gathering locations + will showcase films that The Academy of Motion Pictures have grossly snubbed  films written, produced, and acted by important non-conforming individuals in history who have paved the cinematic way  doing their own thingtheir own damn way. Post-screening discussions will be moderated by some of Phillys wisest community creatives, movers + shakers.

Additionally, we have formed a Boycott the Oscars Youth Crew. Where high school aged youth from our neighborhood will be trained in event production, media literacy, public speaking + important life skills, as outlined by P21s Framework for 21st Century Learning. The Youth Crew will put their new skills to practice + be hired to assist in the production of future cineSPEAK screening events.

UPCOMING SCREENINGS:
Fri Aug 25 - Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust
FRI Sept 22 - Dee Rees' Pariah
