Becoming and Effective Ally with Paula Ioanide

In Cooperation with the Diversity Consortium of Tompkins County.

The word ally is often used to describe people who are not themselves vulnerable to racial, gender and other forms of discrimination but who are genuinely committed to the work of reducing institutional and interpersonal oppressions.

Yet even people who have the best intentions can sometimes perpetuate practices that produce negative outcomes.

This workshop considers useful practices in the work of becoming a good ally in everyday workplace environments and community organizations. It considers the often fraught and difficult process of building trust across race, gender, and sexuality divides. The workshop will focus on:
Understanding how good intentions can sometime produce bad outcomes
Understanding when and how to become a good ally
Becoming aware of the sustained and sometimes emotionally difficult work of staying committed to the work of effective allyship

About the Presenter
Dr. Paula Ioanide is an associate professor at the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity at Ithaca College. Her teaching and research focus on the negative effects of present-day racial and gender injustices. She examines the social and spiritual wounds caused by mass incarceration and militarized policing, anti-immigrant discrimination, and increased poverty.

Paula has conducted numerous workshops on increasing racial and gender equity in higher education and employment settings. She believes in creating social justice cultures and movements that foster healing, interdependence, dignity and freedom.
