First Library free book program (firstlibrary.org) celebrates 10 Year Anniversary at the Library of the Chathams on June 5th
The public is invited to the 10 Year Anniversary Celebration of First Library (firstlibrary.org) on Monday, June 5, from 12 - 1pm, at the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main Street, Chatham.
In addition to a book reading, there will be crafts, refreshments and a clown visit courtesy of READyay, (readyay.com), a new Online Consignment / School Fundraising site.
There will also be a free gift for all children who attend and a free copy of "The Little Engine That Could" for the first 50 children who reserve a spot for the celebration.
Space is limited and reservations are required by Thursday, June 1. Parents are asked to donate outgrown baby clothing or educational toys for First Library's first time mothers in need program, First Library Plus.
Created in 2007 by former Chatham resident Catherine Goldberg, First Library's mission is to promote early childhood literacy for children born to first time mothers through book ownership, educational support and library patronage. Almost 200 children have enjoyed the free book program. First Library Plus provides first time mothers in need books plus clothing and educational toys in concert with parenting programs.
First Library, the first and only fully operational Dolly Parton Imagination Library affiliate in New Jersey, provides a free, brand new, age-appropriate book each month to every child, under the age of 5, registered in their literacy program, free of cost and financial obligation to their families. All we ask is that they read to them daily and maintain local library patronage.
First Library hopes to announce the expansion of the free book program to surrounding communities in the Fall through the generosity of READyay. READyay has pledged five percent (5%) of every sale to the town of the buyer to fund the launch and operation of the First Library program in their community.
Dolly Partons Imagination Library (imaginationlibrary.com) was created in 1995 so that every preschool child in her home of Sevier County, Tennessee, would have their own library of books that would encourage in them a love of reading and learning. Each child, regardless of gender, race or income, registered in the Imagination Library program received a book each month until the age of five, paid for by Ms. Partons Dollywood Foundation. In 2001, Ms. Parton allowed replication of the program. Today, the program is available throughout the USA, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia.
READyay (pronounce red-ay) is a unique online consignment service that raises money for schools through the sale of gently used better and designer women and childrens clothing donated by parents on behalf of their school. Schools receive forty percent (40%) of the proceeds and READyay will be donating five percent (5%) of every sale to First Library.
