For more than 200,000 years, Homo sapiens have been moving around the planet, sometimes drawn and sometimes driven by a host of natural and man-made forces: drought, floods, crop failure, war, the quest for survival, or the hope of a better future. This movement can cause immense upheaval for both migrants and the societies to which they move. But recently, the discussion about immigration has become overheated on both sides of the political spectrum as travel bans, border walls, and terrorism dominate the headlines.
What really happens when vast numbers of our fellow humans are on the move? This event will go beyond the rhetoric to examine the roots and the routes of human migration, the reasons people leave their native lands, and the effects of migrants on the economy and culture of established societies. Explore the push and pull factors that cause human migration, which in turn can help us understand more fully events in the headlines.
This event features Dr. Stacy Bondanella Taninchev, Gonzaga University Political Science professor, and David Fenner, affiliate faculty at the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Moderated by Shann Ray, author and professor of leadership studies at Gonzaga University.
