Événement

105th Anniversary of 'Abdu'l-Baha's Visit to Howard University - Race Amity Tour of Washington DC
Abdul-Bahá visited Howard University's Rankin Chapel on April 23 1912.

In His historic address, 'Abdu'l-Baha, made clear in his southern most travels in America, that Racial Integration on the basis of Unity in Diversity can be established. Must be established. The effect of this talk upon its hearers was profound, summoning "them to a level of consciousness far above mere social liberalism and tolerance. One example that must stand for a range of such interventions was His gentle but dramatic act in encouraging the marriage of Louis Gregory and Louise Mathewthe one black, the other white. The initiative set a standard for the American Baháí community as to the real meaning of racial integration." ( Century of Light )

On this tour we will visit with those impacted by the visit of 'Abdu'l-Baha to illustrate how He impacted race relations in America, in this, his most southern stop of his 239 days in America. Together they built the first example of a Baha'i community in America - Washington DC - to arise to demonstrate a model of racial amity built upon justice, unity in diversity and equality. The 5 hour bus tour will focus upon these early 20th century champions of oneness. The tour includes a visit to the grave of one of the leaders of the first Race Amity Conference to answer the 1919 Racial Terrorism in DC, the site of first Baha'i center in Washington to host an integrated 19 day feast, the first African American Hand of the Cause of God's home, the grave of the pioneer of Race Amity in Washington DC who recorded the Howard Talk for posterity, and the home of the first African American Baha'i in Washington DC. We will meet at 1030 am sharp at the North West corner of Howard Place NW and Georgia Avenue in Washington DC at the foot of the hill to the West of Rankin Chapel. The tour bus will not wait, if you are late you are responsible to catch up. The bus will return there at 330 pm in time for the Commemorative program at Howard University.
