NVJFF 2017 Opening Night presents a pairing of two films - A short film entitled, 'Etoile' followed by the feature-length film, 'The Midnight Orchestra.'

A poignant animated short film that addresses Moroccan Jewish History during the 1960s. Etoile is an 11-year-old Jewish girl who lives with her family and her dog Rex in Casablanca, Morocco. Amid rising racial tensions and hostility spurred by the Yom Kippur War, her family decides to leave Morocco for good.

Told with humor and heart and filled with colorful characters, The Midnight Orchestra is a beautifully told, bittersweet story about Michael, the son of a famous Jewish musician, who returns to his childhood hometown of Casablanca to see his estranged and ailing father. Eventually tasked with giving his father a proper burial, Michael embarks on a quest to reunite the members of his fathers once renowned orchestra. Along the way, lifelong bonds are formed and Michael rediscovers his roots and family history.
