Protect-U & CHARANJIT SINGH - Performing 10 RAGAS TO A DISCO BEAT Live
Charanjit Singh: The rediscovery of Singh's 1982 album "Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat" caused a stir in the world of dance & electronic music two years ago. An album sounding like acid house recorded in Bombay in 1982, 3 years before the first Chicago and Detroit releases. It seemed too good to be true, with some convinced it was a hoax by Aphex Twin or Ceephax. It was not a hoax. In 1982, Bollywood musician Charanjit Singh recorded ancient Indian ragas using Roland drum machines, sequencers, and synthesizers - all set to a "disco" beat. It sounds as if he had a time machine at his disposal, creating what Mojo magazine reffered to as "a startling piece of proto house".
Following a successful November 2012 European debut, two more European runs in 2013, and most recently his Indian debut in December 2013, in July 2014, Charanjit - still a regular performer to Indian audiences - will come to the US to perform his electronic ragas to an American audience for the first time. He will perform the compositions from the landmark "10 Ragas To A Disco Beat" LP, using a Roland TB-303 bass synth, TR-808 drum machine, and a Jupiter-8 keyboard synth.

Protect-U: Proxies for the word "synthesizer" usually imply some sort of limitation: box, rig, assembly, gear, array, machine, and so on. It's all the unfortunate legacy of the rockist lexicography. In Protect-U's hands, though, synths are liberated to contribute whatever they can toward body-moving and brain-waving. The Washington, D.C., duo  Mike Petillo (who co-runs the Future Times label along with Andrew Max D of Beautiful Swimmers) and Aaron Leitko  treats every piece of hardware as an expression of possibility, and then enjoins those circuits into its beat-driven mission.

Free USA, Protect-U's first LP, is merely one high-glow reference point in a planetarium that includes various head-approved EPs, mixes and remixes, as well as a solid history of live shows where established hooks, improvised grooves and new math unite to both honor and disrupt the precepts of house and techno.

Rhythms braid and unbraid, keyboard motifs shift and reverberate, and legends of the switched-on universe are summoned and re-imagined.
