Cinderella, The New Musical
(Alexandria, VA)  Infinity Stage is proud to announce the exciting staged production of Cinderella, The New Musical, with 17 new songs, playing September 22-October 1 at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St., Old Town Alexandria.  Its a hip, witty version of Cinderella, written as much for adults as for kids.  This is a fresh, modern take of the classic tale, says composer Steven W Rodgers of Lake Ridge, Virginia.  Its a pop/rock musical, with elements of jazz, blues and classical. Growing up, I was heavily influenced by Queen, the Beatles, Cole Porter and Mozart, so my scores are fairly eclectic, I think.   and the dancing will be just as eclectic as the music, adds stage director and choreographer Cristina Cayere, with grande waltzes, classic ballet, upbeat tap, some "Thriller" and Irish step dancing! It's all in there! Steven's music just makes you want to move! As Juliana and the costume mistresses add the layers of color and texture to costumes, the whole show becomes a treat for your ears, eyes, funny bone and heart!
Adapted from the Russian version of the classic tale by famed writer Yevgeny Shavarts, with lyrics by British lyricist Wendy Christopher, this show includes such memorable songs as the Fairy Godmothers blues-rock number All that Glitters, the Stepmother and daughters comical Men of Higher Quality, the Princes ballad All for Love, the frenetic Were Gonna Find Her, the Pink Floyd-inspired rock ballad Wishing, performed by Anna Maria Shockey as Cinderella and the poignant Just a Garden Pumpkin, performed by The Pumpkin Carriage, Lynnea Mae Szklany.  Stage direction and choreography is by Cristina Cayere, and  Juliana Cofrancesco is Costumes Mistress. Photography is by Sheila White Guevin and Julia MacInnis.
The charming array of characters include the forever befuddled King, portrayed by perennial local favorite Mike Baker, Jr, who habitually throws his crown on the ground and threatens to go join a monastery whenever things dont go his way.  The kings top Cabinet official, the Mistress of Ballroom Dancing (Carol Jean Clark), uses only her ballet as a means of expressing herself, though it is often ludicrously misinterpreted by the king!  The Stepmother (Jacqueline Salvador), always trying to marry off her daughters, dutifully takes notes in her Velvet Book of the Royal Court, recording even the most insignificant signs of attention from the Prince (Christopher Scott Miller), including the fact that he once cleared his throat and said Hey I wonder where that draft is coming from to the Stepmothers star-struck daughters  (Elizabeth Colandene & Julie Britt).  Cinderellas father, The beleaguered Forest Keeper (Frank Riley), is a courageous warrior in the forest, but by his own admission, he is a bit of a wimp at home, always inventing excuses to get away from his domineering wife.  The innocent young Page (Harry MacInnis), intern to the Fairy Godmother (Dorian Mroz), helps Cinderella throughout with his rudimentary attempts at magic, often failing, but showing us all that his heart is in the right place. Rounding out the cast are Rae Venna as the magician, Zeke Buckholz and Jake Ehrlich as the palace guards,  Elijah Davis as the Coachman, featured dancers Jennifer Stokes & Julia Capizzi, and Daniel Shaub as the Minister of Protocol, whose important duties include continually handing the King back his crown, and informing the guests when it is time to finish their conversations. Musicians include Paul Bell (rhythm and lead guitar) and Johnny Castle (bass guitar), members of the rock/blues band "The Nighthawks" fresh off their latest European tour, as well as Sax player Young Devereaux, trumpet player John Wright III, and drummer Jeff Wolf of Stillwaters Studios.
Parking is free at the Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson St., Old Town Alexandria.  If tickets are still available on the night of the performance, you should be able to buy them at the theatre, but it is highly recommended that you get tickets online so youll be sure to get in (as well as avoiding the higher at-the-door prices).  Premium seating and special ticket prices are now available at www.InfinityStage.com.
