Vula Viel @ St Mary's Art Centre, Sandwich + Support from Hot Feet
Smugglers Records are proud to present VULA VIEL live at St Mary's Art Centre, Sandwich.

Vula Viel are a tour de force. After a few years concentrated preparation, they have exploded on to the UK's jazz and world music scene to lavish critical acclaim. For those who have witnessed them perform, this is no surprise.

Vula Viel combine West-Ghanaian traditional percussive melody, double-drumkit extravagance, irresistible free-jazz saxophone and luxurious bass electronics. They are hybrid, and yet their hypnotic coherence makes such a word feel totally unsuitable. They are new, and cool. As to the double-drumkit, a currently fashionable trend in UK jazz, noone does it better. The intimate interlocking of drummers Dave De Rose (Moloko, Electric Jalaba, Flying Ibex) and Simon Roth (Magnus Loom, Elliot Galvin Trio) goes to the primal heart of percussive music.

At the centre of the group is founder and leader Bex Burch. She plays a type of Ghanaian wooden xylophone, the Gyil, and spent years apprenticing to a Gyil maker and player in Ghana before Vula Viel was concieved. She brings a palpable authenticity to the group, and her impassioned empathy with the music's origins is the very soul of Vula Viel. Furthermore, her stage presence is mesmerising.

While the rest of the group pound out their salute to West-Ghanaian traditional music, sax player George Crowley and synth player Dan Nicholls (of Loop Collective) nod to modern free jazz and minimalism. Their long tone harmonies and soaring mantras galvanise the music, and delve deeper into the essence of the pieces.

Vula Viel means 'Good is Good', and this will most certainly be good. Support comes from the ever-wonderful Hot Feet. The stage will be set up 'in the round', and so vantage points to dance or watch can be found in all 360 degrees. Both of these bands will be enjoyed from any angle, whether seated in quiet observation or up in dancefloor enterprise.

There will be craft beer and cider supplied by Smugglers Records, and inspired tapas foodstuffs from the infamous Tyrone Harewood.
